Ground Fighting

So last night I went to class and towards the end we did some ground fighting. I've never done any of this stuff before so when Bobby explained something once and then said 'go' I was like 'umm... what???'. I'm so used to having set forms of this move comes after this move, that him saying 'start here and then somehow get to here, whatever you want inbetween' was beyond me in comprehending what I was supposed to do. Sparring is SO different from this. The goal in sparring is to stay away from someone and you can't hold them, so it's like you just kick them away. Easy peasy... well, ground fighting techniques go against everything I've been trained to do for the past 8 years. So I was paired with Brandy, and she's done some cage fighting, plus she's great at sparring in the first place so I'm like great, just get to be the rag doll for her. haha. So Bobby showed us some stuff and then had us practice and holy crap! It was SO hard! I was breathing all heavy and sweating and yuck. I have absolutely no upper body strength, and when someone is on top of you, you gotta use your arms. So I have Bobby on the side of me saying 'get your arms out' pssshhh, easier said then done. But it honestly was a really cool experience. Just the high you get from trying to get away from someone holding you is almost enjoyable. lol. It sounds weird I'm sure, but it was really cool. When your doing it you don't really think about what your doing, you just do it. Like, I know you aren't supposed to plan out what your going to do when you spar, but once you spar someone and they do the same thing a couple of times you figure them out, so you know what you have to do to get a point. In this, there's no pre planning you gotta just go, or you are gonna fail. I'm so not the type of person to be agressive. Even in sparring, I'm always the one to sit and just react to the other person. I don't have it in me to be the agressor most of the time, and I think that maybe this ground fighting thing might help that a bit. Overall I had a lot of fun and learned some new stuff. Hopefully I'll be able to do more in the future. Although, my arms are BURNING today!! Guess I better get some muscles up there... heh.
